Men's Conference 2017 Build 2017 - Deliberate Discipling 25/03/17 - Camp Toukley Session 2 The Personal Cost of Discipleship(47.11)Daryl Bay Key Verses: 2 Timothy 1:13-2:7 Introduction Jesus and the Bible shoot straight about the challenge of discipleship. In the New Testament, discipleship is associated with commitment, challenge, adversity, discipline, endurance and faithfulness. Making disciples is not:* making converts * a program * just for the professionals * optional * easy “Making disciples is not an easy process. It is trying. It is messy. It is slow, tedious, even painful at times. It is all these things because it is relational. Jesus has not given us an effortless step-by-step formula for impacting nations for his glory. He has given us people, and he has said: “Live for them. Love them, serve them, and lead them. Lead them to follow me, and lead them to lead others to follow me. In the process you will multiply the gospel to the ends of the earth.” (David Platt) Jesus’ Description of Discipleship (Mark 8:34-35) “34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. “When Christ calls a man, He bids him to come and die.” (Dietrich Bonhoeffer) Paul’s Description of Discipleship (2 Timothy 2:3-6) Exhibit A: A Soldier (v3-4) Exhibit B: An Athlete (v5) Exhibit C: A Hard Working Farmer (v6) Application (2 Timothy 1:13-17) Conference Handbook here
