When young landlord Chainsingh sets his eyes on Muliya, a young Dalit woman who regularly peels and gathers grass from his field, he is spellbound by her beauty and grace. Happily married and simply uninterested, Muliya fiercely refuses the landlord's advances. But when Muliya realises the power she holds over this dominant-caste man, will her desire change?
'Ghaswali', first published in 1929, was written by Hindustani writer and pioneer of Hindi and Urdu social fiction, Dhanpat Rai Srivastava — better known as Munshi Premchand. This story can be used by educators and social workers to have conversations on consent, sexuality and caste in workshops and classrooms.
‘Bolti Kahaniyaan’ is a series of audio stories on gender, sexuality, power, caste, and violence. These stories, selected from Nirantar’s treasure trove as well as from the vast repository of Hindi literature, can be narrated in gender workshops, where these stories can facilitate discussions on serious and complex topics. These stories can also be used by schools, community libraries, youth groups, adult education centres, and men’s discussion groups to kickstart conversations and experience-sharing. Nirantar Trust has used these stories in field workshops and these have led to deep, interesting and even surprising discussions.

ये कहानी है मुलिया की, जो घास काटकर बाज़ार में बेचने का काम करती है. उसकी शादी हो चुकी है और उसका पति उसे बहुत प्यार करता है. ऐसे में एक ज़मींदार युवक चैनसिंह उसे देखता है और उसका दीवाना हो जाता है. बार-बार रोक कर उससे बात करना चाहता है मगर मुलिया के आगे उसकी एक न चलती. वह चुभते हुए शब्दों में अवहेलना की मुस्कुराहट के साथ उसे जवाब देती है तो वह सुन्न रह जाता है लेकिन जब मुलिया को समझ आता है कि उसके जिस रूप पर चैनसिंह इस कदर फिदा है, वही उसके लिए हथियार का भी काम कर सकता है तब उसके भीतर एक नया आत्मविश्वास जागता है.
कहानी में प्रेम संबंधों के यथार्य का गज़ब का उद्घाटन है जो एक ओर, प्रेम और ढोंग तो दूसरी ओर, प्रेम की निष्ठा का वास्तविक रूप सामने लाता है. इस कहानी में हिम्मत भी है, खुद्दारी भी, वाकपटुता और भावप्रवणता का कौशल भी. प्रेमचंद की इस सरल सहज कहानी में यथार्थ की परतें समाई हुई हैं.
मुंशी प्रेमचंद की कहानी घासवाली सबसे पहले 1929 में हिंदी में प्रकाशित होने वाली पत्रिका माधुरी में प्रकाशित हुई थी. सहमति और यौनिकता पर बात करती इस कहानी को जाति, जेंडर, यौनिकता एवं अन्य संदर्भों में कार्यशालाओं में इस्तेमाल किया जा सकता है.
‘बोलती कहानियां’ में हर बार हम लेकर आते हैं जेंडर, यौनिकता, सत्ता, जाति, जेंडर आधारित हिंसा जैसे विषयों पर एक नई रोचक कहानी. निरंतर ट्रस्ट के पिटारे के साथ-साथ हिंदी साहित्य के विशाल भंडारे से चुनकर निकाली गई इन कहानियों के कई उपयोग हो सकते हैं. इन्हें जेंडर कार्यशालाओं में सुनाया जा सकता है, जहां गंभीर एवं जटिल विषयों पर बातचीत के लिए ये कहानियां सहायक का काम करती हैं. इन कहानियों को स्कूली विद्यार्थियों, कम्यूनिटी लाइब्रेरी, यूथ ग्रुप्स, प्रौढ़ शिक्षा केंद्र, पुरूषों के चर्चा समूहों में भी संबंधित विषयों पर बातचीत के लिए इस्तेमाल किया जा सकता है, जो आमतौर पर उनके विमर्श के केंद्र से बाहर ही रहते हैं. निरंतर ट्रस्ट ने खुद इन कहानियों का इस्तेमाल फील्ड वर्कशॉप्स में किया है और इनसे वहां कभी गहरी, कभी रोचक और कभी चौका देने वाली चर्चाएं निकलकर सामने आई हैं.
