Beethoven's Pathetique Sonata in C Minor is justifiably popular the world over. Sam Booth, the son of David Booth from Malvern, made this recording with us some years ago. The tempestuous music somehow manages to brings joy, pleasure and consolation - and yet to convey something of the anguish as well as the triumph of Beethoven's own life at the time that he wrote it. For that reason, it struck me as being a particularly poignant piece of music to accompany the times that we are going through with all their extraordinary ups and - for so many of us - the hugely difficult downs. When I sent the track to Stella Pilsbury she commented, “It reminds me of how anxious – terrified even – the disciples were when they were in the storm boat with Jesus. They felt panic-stricken, fearing that their end was looming near – yet all the time, Jesus was in complete control despite what was going on around Him, even when He appeared to be asleep. “How anxious we get, the moment we take our eyes off the Lord, or when we look at things through our narrow, tunnel vision. Yet He remains in total control, able to calm the raging seas and enable us to complete our journey.”
