In order to understand the significance of this statement, “the kingdom of heaven is at hand,” you must understand and remember the Jews had been waiting for centuries for the Messiah, a deliverer, rescuer who would save them from sin and from oppression. This Messiah would usher in the kingdom of heaven, so proclaiming that the “kingdom of heaven is as hand” was proclaiming that their Messiah was THERE in their midst. (Read Isa 53:4-6, Zech 12:10, 13:1) The good news is that “the kingdom of heaven is at hand,” and the natural response is to repent.
