Until 1928 football players didn’t have #s on the back of their jerseys. When initially introduced, #s signaled where and what role the player plays on their team. Arsenal and Sheffield Wednesday (then known as Wednesday Football Club) were the first two teams to field players wearing 1-11, with the lower numbers belonging to defensive-minded players and higher ones to offensive ones.
