Go to www.momsofheart.com/project180 for full show notes. In this episode, we talk about the big picture when it comes to parenting decisions with regards to our child's health. We have to start with the end in mind. When your child is 18 if life looks like ____ then you won at parenting. For you, for your child, for the outcomes predicted for your child... what is in that blank? For me, there are two factors at play here in this particular conversation. First, let's talk about social skills. Socials Skills Are Critical If I live in fear of my son or anyone in the family getting sick all the time. If we rarely leave the house and when we do I'm 100% paranoid all the time about who is touching what, my children (currently just child but we hope for more) will begin to have anxiety about leaving the house too. By not socializing with his peers he doesn't learn critical social skills that are learned NOW and carry him through the rest of life. Now that being said, there are seasons for everything. If you are in a season where the doctor has told you that your child is not safe to interact with other children and to live in isolation at home for a time due to a current critical medical situation. That's one thing. Too often it seems I hear of that 6 month season turning into a life of fear. Fearing germs, people, and what the next adventure might hold. What good is this life if it's lived in irrational paralyzing fear. That may not describe you and if it doesn't great! It used to describe me.Developing a HEALTHY Immune SystemWhat does a healthy immune system do? Your immune system has a lot of jobs we're going to talk about just a few in regards to the big picture here. Neutralizes cancer cells before they get out of control and spreadDoes not attack normal body tissue (thus creating an autoimmune disease)Does attack foreign invaders like a virus or bacterial infectionThe body does these things all on its own. Sometimes a body has something that pre-disposes it to not be able to do this job well. Sometimes we get in the way and keep the body from doing this job well. If your child just had a heart transplant... their immune system is going through a huge adjustment trying to figure out the new normal. If your child has recently had surgery or has some disease that is not well managed, these are all good reasons to be concerned about the immune system and maybe for a SEASON, it's good to isolate. But how do we make sure the body can do its job well so we can end the isolation season?Small Steps to Good HealthIn this episode, I break this down in detail but I give these 5 tips for improving immune health. Regular Chiropractic CareSupplementsEat CleanRemove Toxins from your environmentThen we address the big question - to Vaccinate or not to vaccinateI'm not the expert here. Dr. Baker has all the answers though. You can check out a full blog post I did about vaccines and our story. This post also talks a little more about Project 180 and how helpful I've found it to be.In some upcoming episodes, I'm looking to find some experts to talk about these other topics (gut health, how to detox after vaccines, how to support good immune health etc.) so be sure to subscribe as I continue to search for the answers to how to help my son have the best health he possibly can!Support the show
