The school bell begins to ring, the shrill sound echoing through the halls of the elementary school. It’s not recess time - school isn’t over - yet the bell keeps ringing. The children look up questioningly at the teacher. He quickly calls the class to order, saying, “Students, I need your attention. This is a fire drill. Do you remember the steps? Okay. Let’s go.”   In schools around the country this scene is repeated monthly to drill the behaviors that need to become automatic if a school is to be evacuated quickly and safely in the case of a real emergency.  In our lives there are times when we need a new behavior to become automatic. We may do things that we know we need to stop doing, or there may be something we need to start doing - but somehow we just cannot overcome the old habits and behaviors. Science has shown that neural pathways are created in our minds over time as behaviors are repeated. Each time a behavior is repeated, that pathway deepens, and the behavior is more likely to be repeated.
