This Reboot Republic #HousingShock podcast talks to Professor Kieran McQuinn, of the ESRI, the Economic and Social Research Institute, about understanding why we are in the housing crisis, the scale of the housing affordability problem, and the economics behind why the state can and should borrow to build social and affordable housing on a major scale. Professor McQuinn worked in the Irish Central Bank and is an adjunct professor of economics at University College Cork and Trinity College Dublin. He explains the economics behind his recent paper which recommended a doubling of the state's Budgetary capital spend on social and affordable housing building. We also discuss the issue of housing, its impact on society and the economy, emigration, the role of institutional investor funds, the problems with the shared equity scheme and how the state can develop the capacity to build.
