About Me Identify a few of the different hats that you wear - the different vocations you carry out. What do you enjoy (or find less enjoyable) about these vocations? What are the specific temptations of each vocation? Into the Bible – Ephesians 1:3-14 Verse 3: What have we been blessed with “in Christ”? Verses 4-6: Identify four ways that God has blessed us “in Christ”. Verses 7-10: Name three gifts given to us “in Christ.” Verses 11-12: What are two results of these blessings from God? Verses 3-14: Count the number of times Paul says “in Christ” or “in him.” What is the significance of this phrase? Application 7 Jesus called the Twelve and began to send them out two by two. He gave them authority over the unclean spirits. Mark 6 In Sunday’s sermon, Pastor revisited the idea of “identity,” as well as the three major ways that people seek “identity” in our society today. Name as many of these three “identities” as you can. What do they have in common? Why might it be helpful to understand these ideas? In Sunday’s gospel reading from Mark 6, Jesus sent out the disciples with responsibility & authority. What were their responsibilities & authorities? Why did Jesus send them with so few physical possessions? Look at the verse above. Why did Jesus send them out two by two? Identify the specific authority Jesus gave to them in this circumstance, and compare this verse with the “achieve / receive” mentality discussed in Sunday’s sermon. “By these words God would tenderly encourage us to believe that He is our true Father and that we are His true children, so that we may ask Him confidently with all assurance, as dear children ask their dear father.” What does the Address to the Lord’s Prayer teach us about our identity - and the privileges that come with this identity? Name two ways that our identity shapes our attitude toward prayer. “But As For You – Identity Received, Not Achieved.” Identify two vocations or circumstances where the mindset of “achievement” has pushed aside the attitude of “receivement.” Christian Identity is clear. Your identity is bestowed by Christ through the marks of the Church – the Gospel in Word & Sacrament. Received, not achieved. Write a prayer asking for Christ’s strength to live with an attitude that reflects this truth. Prayer: Almighty God, we thank you for planting in us the seed of your Word. By your Holy Spirit help us to receive it with joy and to bring forth fruits in faith and hope and love; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever; AMEN.
