At the same time there was a great National victory at GETTYSBURG and July 4, 1863, was the turning point in the Civil War. In the battles from Port Gibson to Vicksburg Grant lost 9,855 men, of whom 1,223 were killed. In these engagements he had made 37,000 prisoners and the Confederates had lost, besides, 10,000 killed and wounded, with a vast number of stragglers.

In recognition of the sesquicentennial of the American Civil War, I am podcasting two audio books, one completed and one in production. The completed audio book is ''A Life of General Robert E Lee''by John Eston Cooke. the audio book in production is ''Personal Memoirs of US Grant'', an autobiography by Gen. Grant.Both books were originally published shortly after the American Civil War. I believe that a historian of that great war will find these two views by the opposing generals interesting and of value.
